Optimizing your Images for your WordPress Post of Page

Contributing Writer: Sabine Sharp – Glendale Designs, Glendale Arizona

You may have already written your article and would like to insert an image or two. Images are a great way to enhance your articles.  But before you just insert this image into your post you need to optimize the image for faster load time and reduce the file size. When a site is graphic heavy, it will take longer to load. In turn your site visitors might not wait around.

Matt Cutts recently released an article dated April 9, 2010 regarding Google’s strategy to Incorporating Site Speed In Search Rankings.  Overall, images need to be optimized to assist your site’s performance.

There are many software programs that can help you accomplish this simple task, here are a few of them:

PhotoShop – priced around $700 – this is a full well rounded image creation, photo editing software.  If you are not planning on doing a lot of editing, this might be more then you will need.

Adobe also offers a program called PhotoShop Elements 8, priced around $99.  Right now they have a special on this:  “Buy now and save US$30. Only US$69.99 after US$10 instant discount plus US$20 mail-in rebate.  Offer ends May 10, 2010.”  This software program will allow you to edit images, re-size them to your specification as well as optimize them for the web.

Realsoft offers a smaller program called ReaCompressor 2.0 priced around $30, which seems to also get the job done.

Another solution would be to use an on-line image optimization tool.  Once you have created your image and adjusted the dimensions you can go here and upload the file.  It will give you  some optimized images as a result and you can just right click and save the one’s you want.

So – the more you are willing to pay, the more flexibility you will have in creating  images for your projects.

The goal here is to have the image size as low as possible without distortion.  A quick way to see the file size is to right click on the image on your computer, under general look at “size” it should have a low number in Kilobytes such as 23.7 KB.   But again, this number can rise in order to retain the quality of the image you are presenting.

Adding a Page to your WordPress site (V 2.9.2)

This simple tutorial with help you in posting a WordPress page to your site.  Again you will need to log into your admin panel:  http://yourdomainname.com/locationWhereYourBlogIs/wp-login.php

WordPress Page

You have now landed in your WordPress admin which it may look similar to this:

WordPress admin - Page

On your site, you probably have “Pages” and “Posts” – so what is the difference?  Commonly at the end of a Post you will see there might be:  Posted in Site xyz category and possibly an author /contributor and date.   A Page on the other hand is a static page and commonly isn’t dated or visitors probably will not be able to comment on those pages. Also when adding a page many times you can add a sub category / or category to your main menu.  I you have already uploaded your images that you would like to insert into this page, continue with the following steps.

To the right of Upload/Insert you will see four icons.  Mouse over them and you will notice the media upload type.

Press “Select Files” and locate the image that you would like to post.

Select the file and it will upload to the server.  Once the image is uploaded, return back to your post that you were creating. If you mouse over the heading a sub menu will appear, select “edit”.

Now locate the position where you would like the image to appear.  Press Upload/Insert and then the image icon. This time select “Media Library” Select the new image and place a Title and Alt Text in along with selecting the Alignment and Size.  Once you select “Insert into Post”, your image is placed into your post.

Now once you have the page composed the way you want, it is a good idea to select “Preview” which will open a rendering in another window.

WordPress admin - Page

Now locate the “Parent” where you would like this page to be located.  Then move to  “Order” – you can now choose the order in which this sub-page will be listed.

Hope this helps!  Happy writing *smile*

WordPress (Version 9.2.2) – Adding a Post and Images to your site

You have a WordPress site and received a briefing on how to add content, but forgot where everything was located.   This tutorial will provide you with some easy instructions on where to go within your WordPress admin panel.

So let’s get started:

Go to your domain name and locate your blog to login. If your complete site is a blog then you would type for instance:    www.domain-name.com/wp-login.php,  however, some people have their blog set up as just a sub-section of their site.  For example,  our blog is located under “news” so you would go to the domain name as follows:   http://glendaledesigns.com/news/wp-login.php  – go ahead and place your username and password in and select login.
You hare now in your WordPress admin which may look similar to this:

WP Verion 9.2.2 Admin Panel

On your site, you probably have “Pages” and “Posts” – so what is the differece?  What you are reading right now is a Post.  Commonly at the end of a Post you will see there might be:  Posted in Site xyz category and possibly an author /contributor and date.   A Page on the other hand is a static page and commonly isn’t dated and visitors probably will not be able to comment on those pages.

WordPress Post

On the left navigation, under Posts, select “Add New”.  Your admin should look similar to the above image.  Go ahead and in section “A” insert your Article’s Heading.  In section “B” you can start writing the article you would like to post.  On the right you will notice Visual | HTML.  If you like to utilize WordPress’ WYSIWYG feature,  you should remain in the Visual tab.  The HTML tab allows you to insert HTML code.

If you start to write and think “oh you know if I place an image here it would enhance this, not a problem.  I would suggest that you go to the top right hand side and locate “Save Draft”, once you have selected this, you saved your work but you have not published it.

To the right of Upload/Insert you will see four icons.  Mouse over then and you will notice the media upload type.

Press “Select Files” and locate the image that you would like to insert.

Select the file from your local hard drive and it will upload to the server.

Once you select “Insert into Post” you image is placed into your post.

Don’t forget to select the Categories you would like this post to appear in, once satisfied with the presentation go ahead and publish it.

WP - Add New Post

If you know beforehand that you plan on using quite a few images, go ahead and select “Add New” from the main dashboard navigation under ‘Media’ and upload all of them at once.
